Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in Maiden Speech

On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
